Experiencing blue screens or unexpected system crashes? These errors can be alarming, but most have straightforward solutions. Here's how to diagnose and fix them.

Symptoms

  • PC suddenly restarts with a blue screen and error code

  • Frequent system crashes, especially under load

  • Error codes like MEMORY_MANAGEMENT or CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED

Step-by-Step Resolution

1. Note the Error Code

When you see the blue screen, note any code displayed. Common ones include:

  • MEMORY_MANAGEMENT - Often RAM-related

  • CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED - System file issues

  • DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - Driver problems

2. Apply Windows Updates

  1. Go to Settings > Windows Update

  2. Install all available updates

  3. Restart and observe if the issue repeats

3. Update Device Drivers

  1. Open Device Manager

  2. Look for any devices with a yellow warning icon

  3. Right-click each and select Update driver

  4. Prioritize graphics, storage, and chipset drivers

4. Check for Corrupted System Files

  1. Right-click Start > Windows Terminal (Admin)

  2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter

  3. Wait for the scan to complete

  4. Restart your PC

5. Test Memory and Disk

Memory Test:

  1. In the Start menu, type "Windows Memory Diagnostic"

  2. Choose Restart now and check for problems

Disk Check:

  1. Open Command Prompt (Admin)

  2. Run chkdsk C: /f

  3. Press Y when prompted and restart

6. Use System Restore

If crashes started recently after an update or software install:

  1. Type "Recovery" in Start menu

  2. Open System Restore

  3. Select a restore point from before the crashes began
