Is your Mac struggling to connect or stay connected to Wi-Fi? Here's how to diagnose and fix connectivity issues.

Symptoms

  • Frequent disconnects or "No Internet" messages

  • Wi-Fi works on other devices but not your Mac

  • Unable to see available networks

Step-by-Step Resolution

1. Toggle Wi-Fi and Test Other Devices

  1. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar

  2. Turn Wi-Fi off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on

  3. Confirm your phone or another device can connect to the same network

2. Forget and Re-add the Network

  1. Go to System Settings > Wi-Fi

  2. Click Details (or the "i" icon) next to your network

  3. Choose Forget This Network

  4. Reconnect and re-enter the password

3. Restart Router and Mac

  1. Restart your router by unplugging for 30 seconds, then plug back in

  2. Wait 2-3 minutes for the router to fully restart

  3. Restart your Mac from the Apple menu

4. Create a New Network Location

  1. Go to System Settings > Network

  2. Use the "..." or Advanced options to create a new network location

  3. Reconnect to Wi-Fi with the fresh configuration

5. Reset Wi-Fi Preferences (Advanced)

If issues persist, you can reset network configuration files:

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi

  2. Navigate to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

  3. Move these files to the desktop: com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, NetworkInterfaces.plist, preferences.plist

  4. Restart your Mac and reconnect
