Running low on storage can cause system slowdowns and prevent updates. Here's how to free up space and manage your disk effectively.

Symptoms

  • "Your PC is running low on storage" notifications

  • Windows updates fail due to insufficient space

  • Programs slow to open or unable to save files

Step-by-Step Resolution

1. Use Storage Settings

  1. Go to Settings > System > Storage

  2. Review which categories use the most space (Apps, Temporary files, Pictures)

  3. Click each category to see detailed usage

2. Clean Temporary Files

  1. In Storage settings, click Temporary files

  2. Select items to remove:

    • Delivery Optimization files

    • Downloads (if you don't need them)

    • Recycle Bin

    • Previous Windows installation (if you don't need to roll back)

  3. Click Remove files

3. Uninstall Unused Apps

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps

  2. Sort by Size

  3. Remove any large apps you no longer use (old games, trial software, unused tools)

4. Move Personal Files to External Storage

  1. Move photos, videos, and archives to an external drive or cloud service (OneDrive, Google Drive)

  2. Delete the local copies once safely backed up

  3. Empty the Recycle Bin afterward

5. Enable Storage Sense (Automatic Cleanup)

  1. In Settings > System > Storage

  2. Turn on Storage Sense

  3. Configure it to automatically delete temporary files and empty Recycle Bin

Storage still constantly full? You may need a larger internal drive or more advanced cleanup. Our team can help plan and safely migrate to new storage.
