No sound from your Mac's speakers or headphones? Audio issues can range from simple settings problems to hardware faults. Here's how to diagnose and fix sound problems.
Symptoms
No sound from built-in speakers or headphones
Audio plays but is distorted or crackling
Sound only works through certain outputs
Volume controls not responding
Step-by-Step Resolution
1. Check Basic Settings
Click the Sound icon in the menu bar
Ensure the volume slider isn't at minimum or muted
Check that the correct output device is selected
Try pressing F10 (mute/unmute), F11 (volume down), F12 (volume up)
2. Verify Sound Output Settings
Go to System Settings > Sound
Under "Output", select your desired device (Internal Speakers, Headphones, etc.)
Ensure "Output volume" slider is up and "Mute" is unchecked
Test the alert sound - click any sound to hear it
3. Check for Stuck Headphone Mode
If your Mac thinks headphones are plugged in when they're not:
Insert and remove headphones several times
Gently clean the headphone jack with compressed air
Check System Settings > Sound > Output to see what's detected
4. Reset Core Audio
Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
Type:
sudo killall coreaudiodPress Enter and enter your password
Core Audio will restart automatically
5. Check Application-Specific Settings
Some apps have their own volume controls
Check the app's preferences for audio output settings
In browsers, check if the tab is muted (speaker icon)
6. Reset NVRAM/PRAM (Intel Macs)
Shut down your Mac
Turn on and immediately hold Option+Command+P+R
Hold for 20 seconds, then release
This resets sound settings stored in NVRAM
